Announcing Dr. Jo Allen as President in Residence with the American Academic Leadership Institute

Dr. Jo Allen, a nationally respected higher education leader, joins Academic Search’s parent organization, the American Academic Leadership Institute (AALI), as the 2026–2027 President in Residence. In this role, Dr. Allen will mentor aspiring higher education executives, share insights from her decades of leadership experience, and work closely with participants in AALI’s leadership development programs.

Dr. Allen’s Experience

A native of La Grange, North Carolina, Dr. Allen has built a distinguished higher education leadership career spanning more than four decades. She is best known for her tenure as the eighth president of Meredith College in Raleigh, where she served from 2011 until her retirement in 2024. A member of Meredith’s Class of 1980, she became the first alumna to lead the institution in its history.

During her 13-year presidency, Dr. Allen guided Meredith through a period of significant growth and achievement. The college exceeded enrollment and retention goals, raised more than $170 million—including $90 million through its largest-ever fundraising campaign—and earned the highest rating from the U.S. Department of Education for financial stability. Under her leadership, Meredith also launched innovative student success initiatives, expanded academic programs, and completed major campus construction and renovation projects.

Following her retirement, Dr Allen was named President Emerita of Meredith College. She also served as President-in-Residence and Senior Advisor for the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) during the 2024–2025 academic year.

Dr. Allen earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Meredith College, a master’s degree in English literature from East Carolina University, and a doctorate in English literature with an emphasis in technical and professional communication from Oklahoma State University.

Throughout her career, Dr. Allen has held leadership positions at Widener University, East Carolina University, and North Carolina State University. She has also made significant contributions to higher education through national service, accreditation leadership, scholarly publications, and board service with numerous educational organizations.

She has published and presented more than 200 scholarly works and has been recognized with numerous honors, including Meredith College’s Distinguished Alumna Award, East Carolina University’s Outstanding Woman of ECU recognition, and North Carolina’s prestigious Order of the Long Leaf Pine, awarded by Governor Roy Cooper.

The President in Residence Role

The AALI President in Residence program offers a unique opportunity for experienced university presidents to shape the next generation of higher education leaders in all four of AALI’s leadership development programs: the Executive Leadership Academy, Senior Leadership Academy, Becoming a Provost Academy, and Mastering the Presidential Search Process. This initiative enriches each program with seasoned expertise and visionary guidance, furthering AALI’s mission to prepare strong and ethical leaders for the future of higher education.

In this role, Dr. Allen will mentor leaders in the 2026–2027 AALI program cohorts, contribute to program development, and lead seminars and workshops. She will also serve as a strategic advisor, offering her deep expertise and broad network to strengthen AALI’s national leadership programs. These programs are delivered in partnership with AALI’s programs, which are held in partnership with the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), with support from Academic Search.
