Hartford International University for Religion and Peace (HIU), one of the nation’s leading resources for interreligious education, research, and peace studies, seeks its next Chief Financial Officer (CFO). HIU’s mission is to educate leaders and enable institutions to thrive in a religiously rich and complex world. As a senior officer reporting directly to the President, the CFO will help the University enhance operations and processes; strengthen the enrollment pipeline; ensure an exemplary experience for students, faculty, and staff; expand academic programs; build partnerships; and distinguish HIU among its peers. To aid these goals, HIU demonstrates significant financial and institutional strengths: a substantial endowment, minimal debt, stable unrestricted operating revenue, strong philanthropic and foundation relationships, an engaged and generous Board, and continued investment in its physical campus.

With 44 employees, including 24 faculty and three postdoctoral fellows, the University offers five master’s degrees and two doctorates, as well as certificates and continuing education. Four well-regarded Centers bring recognition to the institution and its mission.

Given HIU’s recent rebranding and the opportunity to work with a new President, this is an exciting time to join the University’s executive team. The CFO will oversee facilities, safety and emergency measures, risk and insurance, and auxiliary and residential operations, as well as outsourced functions of bookkeeping, auditing, technology, and investment management. Because the current CFO serves on an interim basis, this position is available as soon as it can be filled, with an expected start date no later than January 1, 2027.

The CFO will be expected to serve as a strategic and forward-looking partner and to develop a business model that ensures a thriving university long into the future. Responsibilities include collaborating to grow net tuition revenue and diversify revenue streams; continuing to improve budgeting, forecasting, cash management, and financial reporting; developing and overseeing an integrated approach to capital planning and deferred maintenance; and working closely with outsourced services. The CFO will also build on the momentum currently on campus by inspiring the community to work toward common goals in support of the University’s mission.

More information about this position is available in the full position profile. Experience in higher education or nonprofit organizations is preferred, as is an MBA with five or more years of finance experience. The salary range is $125,000–$175,000, based on experience.
